CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Alice stepped out of the dimly lit bar, embraced by the cool night air. The laughter and warmth from inside seemed to dissipate as she blinked up at the moon, its silvery light making her newly dyed highlighter yellow hair shine like a beacon.
"Bye, Alice!" her friends called after her, still clustered around the entrance. "Seriously, love the new hair! It's so you!"
"Thanks!" she responded with a grin, raising her hand in a final wave. "See you all tomorrow!"
As they disappeared back into the bar with raucous laughter, Alice hesitated for a moment, glancing back over her shoulder. She considered asking one of them to walk with her, her earlier paranoia creeping back in. Just last week, there had been two murders in Perry, which was unheard of in their sleepy little town. She didn't want to be that person who ruined everyone's fun with her worries. Besides, she'd had a few drinks, she was feeling brave, and her house wasn't far. She set off down the sidewalk, her heels clicking on the pavement.
"Okay, I can do this," she told herself, trying to ignore the eerie quiet of the streets. "It's just a short walk home. Nothing bad is going to happen."
As Alice walked, her thoughts drifted back to the laughter and camaraderie she had shared with her friends at the bar. She couldn't help but smile as she thought about how they had all clinked their glasses together in celebration of her finally reaching the legal drinking age. Her happiness bubbled up inside her like champagne, warming her despite the chill of the late September evening.
The cool air bit at her exposed skin, making her shiver. She could feel goosebumps rising along her bare arms and legs.
Maybe I should've worn a jacket, she thought, cursing her decision to prioritize fashion over function. Her outfit, perfect for a night out with friends, seemed woefully inadequate for the brisk walk home.
The once bustling downtown area had become eerily quiet, the lively atmosphere replaced by empty streets and closed storefronts. As Alice continued on her way, she became acutely aware of the sound of her own footsteps echoing off the surrounding buildings.
Where is everyone? she wondered, feeling increasingly uneasy. She'd never seen Perry so deserted, especially on a Friday night. It was as if the entire town had vanished, leaving her utterly alone. But the silence weighed heavy on her, suffocating her previous lightheartedness.
Her heart began to race as she realized that she hadn't seen another soul since leaving the bar. The darkness felt oppressive, the shadows cast by the streetlights looming ominously over her. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched, that there was someoneâor somethingâlurking just out of sight.
With that, Alice quickened her pace, her high heels clicking rapidly on the pavement as she hurried through the deserted streets. Every creak and rustle in the night seemed amplified, causing her heart to pound even harder in her chest.
Just as Alice was about to turn the corner
